外教系列讲座第八场成功举行

12月22日晚七点🕵️‍♀️,本学期第八场外教系列讲座在丽泽C105成功举办🧘🏽‍♂️,本次讲座的主题为“Accentuating the Accent—Uncovering the Myth of the British Accent”。来自英国的外教James Gardiner通过问答游戏,视频短片,图表展示等趣味的方式向在场的同学介绍了英国极具特色的地方语言,展示了南北方言差异,并提出了对待不同语言的正确态度。

首先,James通过自己的亲身教学经历拉开本次讲座的序幕🧚🏿‍♀️🤽🏿‍♀️。他向同学们解释了语言、方言口音等几个名词的定义,让同学们有了“方言从属于地方口音”这一基本概念,并且以英国纽斯卡尔的语言特色为例进行具体的阐述🎉。他认为尽管人们的语言差异反映了社会的不同阶层,但大家不应当因自己的口音和大家不同就感到丢脸和羞愧,相反同学们应树立一种自我的文化认同感。

接着⚧,James系统的介绍了英国方言的种类👩🏿‍🦲,介绍了不同地区的语言特色。通过听写和跟读与在场的同学、老师进行互动交流,将爱尔兰🔒、威尔士、苏格兰这三大地区的语言进行反复比较。整个过程中他一直向同学灌输一些关于语言、文化的正确观念,如🎿:大家应该接受任何形式的方言;每个人的英语都或多或少带着地方口音;大家在练习英语口语时不应将重点放在口音的纠正上🚐,而是更需要多多重视自己的发音和语音语调🙇🏿。

最后,大家据这一主题积极提问,James也耐心地一一回答。整场讲座充满了James英国式的诙谐和幽默,气氛融洽,在场师生获益良多👩🏿‍🍳。

A Lecture: Accentuating the Accent—Uncovering the Myth of the British Accent

The final lecture, given by James Gardiner—a gentleman from Britain, has been successfully held at 7:00 P.M, on 22nd December. The topic was “Accentuating the Accent—Uncovering the Myth of the British Accent”. Through interesting games, video clips, tables, Mr. James Gardiner stated different local languages in British, showed the diversity of British dialects from North to South, and mentioned the attitude which we need to take about accent.

At the beginning, James shared his own teaching experience with the students. He explained what is “language”, “dialect” and “accent” and helped us to set up the basic conception that “dialects include accents”. To make it clear, James took examples of speakers from Newcastle. According to his ideas, though people can be judged his or her social class by the diversity of languages and dialects, we should not feel shamed for keeping our own accent. On the contrary, it is better for us to have cultural identity.

What is more, James introduced types of British dialects and local colors of languages in different regions. With some reading and dictations, he compared the languages in Ireland, Wales and Scotland. He provided reasonable conceptions about languages and cultures for students during the whole lecture. For examples, any accents are acceptable; everyone has dialect more or less when speaking English; we should pay much more attention to pronunciation and intonation rather than accent.

Finally, James answered our questions with large patience and broke our doubt. A student said "James, with his British humor, really impressed us a lot!"
