10月19日下午3🦵🏿：30，外院特色活动之外籍教师系列讲座第二场在综合楼A207成功举行🍏💬。本次讲座由来自美国的王道明教授主讲☄️，题为English Vowel Length and English Derivational Doublets。

本次讲座分为两个部分。在第一部分中🙆‍♂️，王道明教授着重为同学们讲解了英语元音的长短特点，探讨了长短音的发音规律及原理，并结合许多例词的对比加以说明😯。他还指出国内字典鲜有关于长短音的解说，这很容易让同学们对发音造成误解。在第二部分中🈵，王道明教授通过解释构词法及词语的发源，带领同学们探索了同源词的奥妙。通过列举大量词汇的变化和比较🥫，同学们进一步理解了词根的变化规律与原因。

在每个知识点结束之际，王道明教授都会非常耐心地询问在座同学是否存在疑问，并一一作出解答✌🏿。有同学表示，这场讲座让他从语言学的角度更深刻地理解了字词发音及记忆的规律，对自己的英语学习非常有帮助🧑🏻‍⚖️。

A Lecture: English Vowel Length and English Derivational Doublets

At 3:30 p.m. on October 19, the School of Foreign Languages held the second lecture given by native English teachers in Zonghe A207. Professor Wang Daoming from the United States held this lecture, which was entitled "English Vowel Length and English Derivational Doublets".

The lecture was divided into two sections. In the first section, Professor Wang introduced the English Vowel Length. From the lecture, students knew that English vowels might be either long or short, and regular length alternation played an important role in the pronunciation of modern English words. In order to help students to understand that, he listed plenty of words. What''s more, he pointed out the misunderstanding of students in English pronunciation.

In the second section, Professor Wang introduced the English Derivational Doublets. Since English has borrowed words from many languages, English has many doublets where the members are related by rules, thus allowing us to rapidly expand our vocabulary. Professor Wang taught students these rules to help students to recognize them and memorize vocabulary.

During the lecture, he often asked students whether they had questions and answered them patiently. Students said that this lecture made them understand the vocabulary better from the linguistics perspective, which would contribute to their study in the future.
