English Corner-Culture Blending
By HE Wenyi
On the evening of January 8, the first English corner in 2014 was held in the Library. This week’s topic was “Culture Blending”. Mr. Sean McHugh had a chat with the students at the same corner on the left side of the lobby.
Firstly, Mr. Sean McHugh asked whether the students agree there were many differences between Chinese and western people. The students thought for a while and nodded their heads while Mr. Sean McHugh didn’t think so. He discussed a variety of subjects with the students. The students stated their opinions actively and were reminded not to chase the popularity blindly.
When it came to cooking, Mr. Sean McHugh spoke highly of Chinese food. He loved to taste strange food as well. Mr. Sean McHugh had even tried the smelly bean curd, roast pupa and ants in different places. Not all the students can accept insets as food, but a Cantonese student listened to him excitedly and shared lots of experience of eating strange food. What’s more, Mr. Sean McHugh introduced the similarities between Chinese and western horoscopes, in which he showed a great interest. Joking with the students, he said, “so…I’m a cow and rooster! (Taurus and year of Rooster)” Besides, Mr. Sean McHugh shared his views on aliens'' mysteries and the touring experiences around the world.
The wide-range communication tonight covered many similar values between different cultures. As a foreign teacher, Mr. Sean McHugh hoped to make more contributions to promote culture blending. Students were suggested to know more about other cultures to broaden horizons.
