The First Portuguese Corner Organized by SFL
Reporter: He Wenyi
As another extracurricular activity of the SFL, for the first time, Portuguese corner was held on the second floor of the library at 7:00pm, on the evening of Mar.26. Ms. Sara Guimaraes, with two exchange students of Portugal, Luís and Jusé, chatted with the students in a relaxing atmosphere.
Firstly, Ms. Sara asked students to introduce themselves in turns to know each other. Though it was not easy for students to speak Portuguese, Ms. Sara gave guidance to them patiently and encouraged students to express themselves in Portuguese. However, Jusé felt a natural affinity with the Portuguese corner for the reason that almost no one could communicate with him in his first language around him in China. Ms. Sara, Luís and Jusé all felt awkward at the time when they first arrived in China. They got in some troubles, for instance, the Taxi drivers overcharged them, the workers at the station failed to understand their Chinese and they confused others when trying to order food in the restaurants. After hearing their experience, a junior student who went to Portugal to study last semester understood them well. Being asked how she overcame the loneliness in a foreign country, this girl shared that the secret was to stay in the library every day. Students in the same Portuguese classes with her witnessed her great progress. To sum up, only had you gradually adapted to the new environment, would you be appealed to the extraordinary life living aboard.
The English-Portuguese direction has been set up for nearly four years. The SFL always tries to create a good environment for students to learn Portuguese. All the students who want to learn Portuguese are welcome to the Portuguese Corner every Thursday night.
